On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
