The former Brazilian president detained after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
