There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately ten lumberjacks working for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical cutter, which converted timber to planks with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and cultural dominance across Europe and the world.

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step per stroke.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine them in order that they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every descending motion while moving on every return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”
