Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
